Thomas Nelson Community College (abbreviated form: TNCC) is a two-year college located in Virginia. It has two campuses - one located in Hampton, and the other in James City County near Williamsburg. It also has two education centers The Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News and the Williamsburg Discovery Center in Williamsburg.[1] The institution is one of the twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System. It mostly serves students living on the Peninsula region of Hampton Roads, but it also has students from other parts of southeastern Virginia.

History

The college was named after Thomas Nelson, Jr. (December 26, 1738 – January 4, 1789) was an American planter, soldier, and statesman from Yorktown, Virginia who represented Virginia in the Continental Congress and was its Governor in 1781. He is regarded as one of the U.S. Founding Fathers since he signed the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Virginia delegation Declaration of Independence[2]. He served as Governor of Virginia in 1781. Nelson County, Virginia and Nelson County, Kentucky are also named in his honor. The construction of TNCC began in August 1967. Four buildings were planned for construction, and the cornerstone was laid in December 1967. More than 1,200 Students began classes on September 20th, 1968, and the first class of students graduated with associate degrees on June 13th, 1970[3].

President

Alvin Shexnider, Ph.D., is President of Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia. Before retiring in April 2007, he was Executive Vice President of Norfolk State University where he also served as Acting President and Interim President. A former Chancellor of Winston-Salem State University, he has held faculty and administrative positions at Southern University, Syracuse University, The Federal Executive Institute, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth University and Wake Forest University.

Dr. Schexnider earned a B.A. degree in Political Science at Grambling State University. He received the M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Northwestern University where he held Norman Wait Harris, Ford Foundation and Woodrow Wilson fellowships.

He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the J. Sergeant Reynolds Award for Outstanding Service in Public Administration, The Grambling State University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Alpha Phi Alpha Distinguished Educator of the Year Award, and the Grambling State University Hall of Fame.

Dr. Schexnider is a co-author of Blacks and the Military (Brookings Institution) and has written extensively on public management and higher education. He has served on the editorial boards of Public Administration Review and the Journal of Power and Ethics. He was featured in two documentaries regarding construction of the Alaska Canada Highway, one produced for American Legacy in 2003 and another produced for the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) American Experience Series in 2005.

He serves on several boards including the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Board of Trustees of Excelsior College (New York), Chairman of the Innovation Integration Board of South Carolina, the Board of Governors of the Town Point Club, the Board of the United Way and the Board of Smart Beginnings of South Hampton Roads. He is also a former trustee of Marketwatch Funds and Wachovia Funds and Municipal Funds. [4]

Tuition & Accreditation

As of fall 2010, tuition for in-state students is $101.00 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state students is $279.60 per hour. Institutional fee for fall and spring is $10.50 per semester, and is $7.25 for summer semesters. The VCCS technology fee is $6.50 per credit hour. Out-of-state students must pay a capitol fee of $15.00 per credit hour[5]. Thomas Nelson Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools [6]

TNCC offers 50 associate degree programs, and has over 60 certificate programs[7].

The completion rate is approx 17%.

Enrollment

More than 16,300 students enrolled at Thomas Nelson Community College in 2010-2011, a 2.9 percent increase and a record high for the institution.[8]
